Diabetes

Hawaiians are at increased risk for diabetes.
Women are more likely to suffer from diabetes
than men.

According to the National Diabetes Information
Clearinghouse, data collected from 1996 to 2000
suggest that Hawaiians are 2.5 times more likely to
have diagnosed diabetes than Caucasians of similar age.

The following table shows that Native Hawaiians are at increased risk for developing type II diabetes compared with Caucasians in the United States. (Prevalence of diabetes in the United States for people age 14 or older.)

Population

Caucasians

Native Hawaiians

For Pacific Islanders ages 45 to 64, diabetes ranked as the fifth-highest cause of death.
