     What NORD does

The National Organization for Renal Disease’s (NORD) project is called A.P.E.R. – Awareness, Prevention, Education, and Research. Our community health screenings and education program is "Prevention Can Be the Cure" Health Screening and Health Education.

NORD is a nonprofit health agency that holds community health fairs and health screenings for high risk populations (18 and older) who are predisposed to developing kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension. All screenings and education materials are free of charge to participants. Our target populations include Latinos, African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and seniors. We serve communities in Los Angeles City and County, San Fernando Valley, and San Gabriel Valley, including Orange County. Since 1998, NORD has screened and educated over 42,000 clients in these areas.

In addition to covering renal function, blood glucose, and high blood pressure, NORD’s health screenings provide nutrition, diet modification, and stress-reduction information, and include follow-up healthcare referrals where needed. We also provide healthy foods and beverages, and distribute health screenings tools as they become available to clients. NORD provides all screening equipment, medical supplies, and licensed healthcare staff including doctors, nurses, nutritionists, phlebotomists, medical technicians, clinical laboratory scientists, professional volunteers, and university interns. In addition, we promote organ and tissue donation and have produced several Organ and Tissue Donor Education Events.
